Track 11:         Word of Life

Wrote this song during a big "Keith Green" phase. I had just read his biography "No Compromise" and was reacquainted with his music throughout the summer. It was 1997. I was working for the public school in my hometown repainting window trim and roof edge. It had been raining for a few days (during which I was inside cleaning lockers) then the sun came out, and I was back outside. I wrote a song about the goodness of sunshine and the power of words for a service in Minot where I was being considered as a youth pastor. We recorded the tune for "Bigger Than Me," and for some reason or another, decided it wasn't ready. So alas, unchanged, here it is...

Word of Life

by Jeremy Erickson

There's a time and a season,

For everything under the sun.

A time to speak and a time to keep silent,

And a time to have fun.

But when it comes to living - talking with people every day -

When there's a listening ear standing near,

I gotta be careful what I say,

Cuz a word can do much more than I want it to.

So when I open my mouth, I want the best to shine through.

chorus

A word can do for the soul,

What the sun does for the sky.

A word can chase away the darkness of night,

And dry the tears that you cry.

So when you're feeling kinda low,

Keep your head up high.

Coming down from above, there's a message of love -

A word of life.

Everyone has a reason to be stubborn and complain,

But if I do that in the name of Christ,

What makes me different than the guy down the lane?

And I have heard that with one word, you can heal a broken heart.

And there's a world out there who needs a friend who cares,

To make a difference, you can start by

Falling to your knees,

And making apologies.

It'll be so good, cuz God will like what He sees.

[chorus]

A word like

It'll happen.

You're doing fine.

Enjoy the journey,

Just take your time.

Friend, God loves you.

The Father sees.

Our God surrounds you.

Can I pray for you, please?

[chorus]
