Track 14:         The Deer Song

I was visiting the Valparaiso campus in Indiana, and felt a need for this psalm as I prepped for a concert. Sitting in Jed's room, reading 42 from an NIV, and playing my guitar, I sang the words that seemed to best capture the crux of the text and the issue of the moment - conveying the hunger I sensed while reading those words - the battle, the che, the desire, and the exhortation to hope in God in spite of (or even TO spite) despair.

Psalm 42 (The Deer Song)

Music by Jeremy Erickson

As the deer is panting for the water,

So my soul is longing for You.

My soul, it thirsts for God -

For the Living God -

When shall I come and see His face?

My tears have been my food both day and night.

My soul is pouring all day long.

My tears have been my food both day and night.

They say to me, "Where is your God?"

Why are you in despair now, O my soul?

Hope in God, for I will praise Him.
