WHEN GOD SAYS NO

Hebrews 11, "The Hall of Faith"

Have you ever asked God for something he didn't give you? Have you ever prayed a prayer for which God's answer seemed to be 'No?' I have. And I've wondered whether the Bible has anything to say about it. Here I want share with you some of the fruit of such wondering. And I want to frame it with a smattering of verses from an unlikely passage for our purposes: Hebrews 11, often referred to as "the hall of faith..."

SABBATH

I Can Live Here

There is a renewed interest in the Sabbath among the church at large. Along with it is a good deal of confusion. What is the Sabbath? What is it for? Are we supposed to keep it? And if so, how? Didn't Jesus abolish the Sabbath? And exactly how far away is one galaxy from another? What? Considering the Sabbath in its early contexts, and tracing it through the works and words of Jesus, Jeremy insists the Sabbath, in purpose and practice, is to be a gift and a delight to the world.

GLASSES: Get in the Game

AWANA Summit 2009

At the AWANA Youth Summit in April 2009, Jeremy gives a message on the relationship between holiness and service, mining a Biblical history of holiness and an observation gleaned from the parable of the Good Samaritan. What is holiness according to Jesus? At least, in what ways are holiness and service intertwined? What does it mean to be holy in the presence of need?

RESURRECTION & LAMENT

Meditations on Death and the Age to Come

A 2-part sermon series: Living Hope Church, St. Michael, MN - August 2008

Death works its way into our lives in ways both subtle and absurd. How are we to faithfully grieve? Can we grieve, knowing that death is not the end for those who belong to God? And what is the end of death? What is our hope for those who die? In this series, Jeremy grounds the promise of bodily resurrection in the Apostle Paul's earthy metaphors, and gives God-ward lament a primary place in the life of a faithful Christian.

IN UZ WITH ABBA

Trusting God With Our Pain

How has Jeremy reconciled his experience with cancer with his faith in a loving God? In "In Uz With Abba," Jeremy seeks to understand biblically the intersection of pain and grace. Framed within the context of his story, the lives of Job, Joseph, Jeremiah, and Jesus infiltrate his (and our) present reality with hope in the midst of our pain.

Condensed here into a 45-minute Sunday sermon, the content can be elaborated upon to great lengths in as many as five sessions tailored specifically for middle-schoolers or middle-agers. Countless individuals have benefited from Jeremy's words here, in school, retreat, and church settings. Listen, and if they be words that might bless your community, email Jeremy to inquire about the possibility of him speaking where you are.
